The Information Services Branch provides the Department with the important information systems and technology tools to manage the information and geological database of the Department. First of all, this Branch coordinates the Department's computerized database systems known as the PNG Geological and Earth Resources Information System (GERIS). The GERIS presently contains databases and supporting report programs for titles management and accessing bibliographic data as well as a range of geo-scientific databases including mineral deposits, geochemistry, geophysical surveys, geophysical data, engineering properties of rocks and hydro-geological data. Secondly, the Branch provides drafting services for the production of geological maps of PNG, and publication support for publication of geological reports, and the provision of systems management and miscellaneous programming services.
The Branch also maintains the Department library and archives containing collection of technical reference, including books and journals and non-confidential reports, publications, maps and tapes, which form part of the GERIS system. In addition, the Information Services Branch looks after the internet and the intranet services of the Department.
