Papua New Guinea is located in an environment that is geologically and tectonically very active. It is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone where earthquakes occur daily and volcanic eruptions occur frequently. Papua New Guinea has 14 active and 22 dormant volcanoes. Nearly 71% of the active volcanoes are located on the Bismarck Volcanic Arc system that spans from Bam volcano in East Sepik Province to Rabaul in East New Britain Province. All the active volcanoes have erupted at least once during the last 235 years.
